CommanderAI, a startup founded in early 2024 by David Berg, is on a mission to modernize sales in the $100 billion U.S. waste management industry. Unlike traditional CRMs such as Salesforce or HubSpot, which are often too complex and generic, CommanderAI is designed specifically for waste management companies, dumpster rental services, and industrial recyclers.
Berg, who gained first-hand experience in the industry as the first employee at Battle Motors, noticed that most waste management sales still rely on outdated methods like pen-and-paper, door-to-door pitching, and minimal digital tools. “We saw an opportunity to be the first to truly disrupt this market,” Berg said.
Purpose-Built CRM for Waste Management
CommanderAI’s platform uses AI to gather and segment data that waste management companies actually need — such as small businesses without online footprints or new construction projects that aren’t widely advertised. The software is tailored to industry-specific contracts and workflows, making it easier for haulers, recruiters, and sales teams to operate efficiently.
Market and Growth
The waste management industry is massive, with players ranging from small operators with one truck to giants like Waste Management, valued at $90 billion. Currently, CommanderAI is finding traction with medical and hazardous waste companies and aims to support businesses of all sizes, from regional haulers to enterprise-level operations.
Funding and Expansion
CommanderAI recently raised a $5 million seed round led by 11 Tribes Ventures, with participation from Watchfire Ventures, Gaingels, and Rad Fund. The funding will be used to expand the sales team and add new product features, including mapping, routing, and marketing automation.
“Our goal is not to replace sales teams but to help them sell more efficiently,” Berg explained. The company ultimately hopes to capture 30% of the waste management industry while expanding into adjacent sectors in the future.
